France, 18th century. Lieutenant Andre Duvalier (Jack Nicholson) has been accidentally separated from his regiment. He is wandering near the coast when he sees a young woman (Sandra Knight) and asks her for directions to Coldon, where he hopes to rejoin his regiment. But the woman doesn't answer, doesn't even greet him and walks away. Eventually she takes him towards the sea, where she disappears in rough water. Andre loses consciousness while trying to follow her, and is attacked by a bird and awakes in a house where an old woman (Dorothy Neumann) claims never to have seen the woman. After he leaves, he sees the woman again, and while trying to follow her, is saved by a man from certain death. Andre learns that in order to help the girl, he must go to castle of Baron Von Leppe (Boris Karloff), and when he arrives, Andre sees the woman looking out of a window. However, Baron Von Leppe is old and seems reluctant to let Andre in. He claims there's no woman in the castle, but shows Andre a painting which does indeed portray her. Andre learns that she is the Baroness, who died twenty years ago. What is the baron's secret? Written by Arnoud Tiele (firstname.lastname@example.org) and subs111

Subject: Higher Budget for Roger Corman
Clearly, Roger Corman had a bigger budget than usual for this flick. However, after paying Karloff and young Nicholson, he couldn't afford real rocks. I was amused at how many scenes showed the floating rocks.
Some movie directors (like Corman) must really think dead people putrify rather than dessicate (dehydrate).
Lots of unanswered questions: Why the beach? Why the soldier with a horse on the beach? Why the temtress on the beach with the soldier and a horse? All-in-all, worth a watch. Decent escapism.
(Spoiler Alert) Why couldn't the old woman (who was younger than Karloff) tell that Karloff's character was her son, who was thought to have died only 20 years earlier? Why did the manservant make the mistake of killing the wrong man?
Subject: The Terror
Loved it. Brought back memories. Dick Miller. Wow. Boris and Jack. Francis. Wow. Thanks.
Subject: One Big Noticeable Gaffe
I've seen this film so many times since I was a kid but the one thing I always get a kick out of is the climax. The crypt is flooding and caving in and the falling stones are FLOATING IN THE WATER! I LOVE IT !
Subject: ....Classic Corman Quickie..
...Shot on the set of "The Raven" (as they were tearing down sets around them)..This was Nicholson's 7th film..Karloff's scenes were shot in three days..A Favorite..Nice print..Kudos to uploader..!
Subject: Great Post!
Excellent picture and sound! This the best of the uploads of this old classic. Good color, contrast, and brightness. Plus, it's the TRUE full wide aspect of the original. Not a cheap full field blow-up and cropped wide to fool people. Great post!!! Thanks *****
